Ghana will have to wait for the next two years to stand a chance of winning the African Nations Championship following defeat to Niger at the quarterfinal stage.

The Black Galaxies were determined to clinch the trophy after finishing as runner-up twice.

But their road ended after conceding two goals to the Nigerien.

Imarana Dan Baro’s deflected header opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Soumana Hainikoye doubled Niger’s lead with a brilliant curling effort past goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad.

With 25 minutes to go, Ghana thought they had reduced the deficit after Kwame Otu poked him but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Niger will face Algeria in the semi finals of the championship.
